AUSTRALIA’S FIRST FAMILIES OF WINE:

HEADING TO THE UK & US TO CELEBRATE THEIR 10th ANNIVERSARY

Media release - for immediate release

September 2019

As part of Australia’s First Families of Wine’s (AFFW) commitment to promoting premium wine at home and across the globe, the families are thrilled to be returning to London as part of Wine Australia’s Australia Redefined tasting on Tuesday 17 September before heading on to the US.

London was, in fact, the first international stop for AFFW in 2010 after launching in Australia in 2009. In a rapidly changing wine landscape, AFFW is looking forward to re-connecting with key players in the wine trade and media, telling the stories behind each bottle of wine they craft. And as AFFW celebrates its 10th anniversary, their rich stories of longevity, history, provenance and craftsmanship continue to resonate with the wine-interested community.

Chairman Stephen Henschke says the visit to the UK will “re-engage with the UK wine trade and media, a highly valued relationship that has been built over many years individually and together as a group. And with The Ashes wrapping up in London, there is sure to be plenty of sporting and wine banter!”

AFFW is hosting one of only two masterclasses on the Australia Redefined day, being held at the iconic Oxo Tower. It will be the first time that their highly successful UNLOCKED format will be presented in the UK. ‘Unlocking’ their personal family cellars, the families will be presenting their flagship wines. Named UNLOCKED, think 2009 Tyrrell’s Vat 1 Semillon for a taste of the Hunter Valley; experience arguably Australia’s most esteemed wine, 2005 Henschke Hill of Grace and finish with the 100-point Campbells Merchant Prince Rare Rutherglen Muscat. The calibre of wines on taste becomes clear.

With a range of family members in the room of these multi-generational, family owned wine businesses, the tasting is sure to be more than memorable.

The families will be presenting their current in-market vintage wines as part of the broader Australia Redefined tasting over the course of the day. After the return visit to the UK, the AFFW group will continue with Wine Australia to the US for the Made Our Way roadshow, visiting New York, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco. AFFW will be presenting mini masterclasses in New York and Dallas as part of the roadshow: Australian Classics in New York and Shades of Shiraz in Dallas. With a few family members on the US roadshow, trade, media and consumers alike can learn more about the tales behind the bottles and discover their unique family histories.

Stephen Henschke went on to say, “As a group we are working hand in glove with Wine Australia to keep telling the stories behind our families and the iconic wines that we make. We are delighted to head back to London where it all began before heading back to the US again to support the Australian premium wine cause.”

Australia’s First Families of Wine is a proud and enthusiastic participant in many of Wine Australia’s international roadshows and continue their profile-raising and tasting mission, taking the best Australian wine to the world backed by over 1300 years of collective winemaking experience.

BACKGROUNDER

AFFW came together as an extended family in 2009, to tell the tales and stories behind their family businesses, both here and around the world. Self-funded, the group has driven the messages of quality and provenance of premium Australian wine, sharing stories and anecdotes as custodians of some of the most iconic vineyards this country boasts. With wines made with a true sense of place and with a genuine history full of passion, innovation and provenance, AFFW is well placed to claim ownership of the ‘family’ mantle.
